Wisdom & Wonder of Articles for Thought from Grumpy Grandma

Wisdom & Wonder of Articles of Thoughts from Grumpy Grandma is what you will find here, which are mostly observations from a very observant lifestyle. These are the moments, the curious facts, and the simple things I’ve encountered that I felt compelled to share. Things that have happened to myself or someone close to me, places I’ve visited and loved within the United States. Even a little deeper look into the oddities of everyday life, like a different kind of doll or do we actually know what is in our cooking oil.

My curiosity drives me to look and do different things, and it’s a pleasure to share them with you. Sometimes, all it takes is one thoughtful article to spark a new perspective.

Seed Oils: What Your Grandma Knew About Cooking Fats

We often call them vegetable oils, but they’re extracted from seeds, and they are everywhere. We cook with them all the time. They’re in packaged foods, and every restaurant that relies on them. The question isn’t whether they’re convenient, which they are. But are they really good or bad for us?
The truth is, many popular seed oils like soybean, corn, and cottonseed are high in polyunsaturated fats.

They have to go through extensive, high-heat processing, including bleaching and deodorizing, for every bottle. This process is what raises my grumpy alarm bells. Why are we relying on something so heavily processed when we have classic, whole-food fats?  That has worked for generations? Sure, there are benefits to some, like sesame or flax, but the industrial oils found in most foods are not for me.

My firm stance on this is to stick to the old ways. For high-heat cooking, use lard or butter. For drizzling and baking, use quality, cold-pressed olive oil. It’s simpler, more natural, and your body will thank you for the unnecessary processing. If a food product has cottonseed oil on the label, put it back on the shelf. This is one of those times Grandma’s “NO” means “NO.”

Simple Solutions for Painful Feet and Ankles

Chronic foot and ankle pain can bring your life to a halt. I know this misery firsthand. Whether you’re limping, relying on a cane, or just trying to ignore that constant ache you have. It often leads to lower back pain, which makes simple movement agonizing. We try everything. Physical therapy, endless pain medication, or even shots, it’s all frustrating. Traditional treatments can be overwhelming.

Before you invest in yet another round of treatments, I would like you to please, look at two simple things. These often get overlooked.

  1. The Shoe Audit: When was the last time you bought proper shoes? I don’t mean cute ones. I mean shoes that support your arches and have a wide, stable base. Cheap, flimsy shoes are the number one culprit. Invest in quality footwear, even if it is expensive. It’s cheaper than a doctor’s visit down the line.
  2. The Cold Soak Ritual: Don’t underestimate the power of a simple cold water soak or even an ice bath for your feet. Only if you can tolerate it. It reduces the immediate inflammation that builds up over the day. Do it for 15 minutes every single night, and you’ll notice a massive difference.

If you are dealing with chronic, debilitating discomfort, you need a solution that goes beyond temporary fixes. Don’t let that constant ache rule your day.

Southwest Plants: A Lesson in Resilience

Wisdom & Wonder of Articles for Thought

I have found the resilience of Southwest Plants to be an absolute wonder. It’s a great metaphor for life. These plants survive and thrive in a desert climate. Where the temperature swings from scorching daylight to freezing evenings. They can be extreme. Plants from the Southwest have to be at least drought-ridden to survive.

They teach us that survival isn’t about having an easy life. It’s about being deeply rooted and adaptable, like us women. They conserve water and energy, knowing that the dry times will last longer than the rain. This is a quiet form of beauty. The tenacious life that fights to exist against the odds. It’s a reminder that we, too, have to find our inner strength and conserve our energy when life gets difficult.

  • Gift Baskets: The Thoughtful Entertainment needs an easy idea that shows that you care. Gift baskets are an amazing idea for any occasion. Why, because they are customized and surprising. You can gift them with anything. Like from specialty bath soaps to, dare I say it, some real fine wines inside? Focus on the thought and the presentation. It’s the personal touch that makes them entertaining and so memorable.
  • The Appeal of Scary Dolls: They are popular in horror movies and urban legends. Often depicted as possessing malevolent and supernatural qualities. Spooky, right? Creating a sense of fear and unease is all about the macabre.  And we love scary stuff because it gives us a reason to snuggle up and comfort each other. But there’s a unique art to the custom-crafted, scary-looking dolls. They are created from a lot of love and imagination. These are conversation pieces, not just props.
