Once you understand why I feel so strongly about store-bought baskets. Maybe, you will never go back to store-bought baskets again. A gift basket is not just a collection of items, it is a message. It says: I know you. I thought about you specifically. I care enough to do something extra. That is a powerful thing to give someone, and it does not require a big budget to do that.

The secret to a great homemade gift basket comes down to three things. 

• First, Theme — something that ties all the items together and speaks directly to who the person is.
•  Second, a Container. One that is useful on its own. Not a basket that gets tossed in a closet. 
• Third, Fun or Comfort.  You will need to include at least one item that is just for the person. Something that makes the person smile the moment they see it. Maybe even laugh.

Now here is the section that is closest to my heart. These are the baskets I have made for my own children. Even when your kids are grown and living their own lives, they still need to know that their mother is thinking about them. A gift card is easy.
